Free HIV training for primary care staff in Lambeth, Lewisham, and Southwark

Delivered by the love tank & Prepster

About the training

The Love Tank is delivering a free, flexible training programme for primary care staff — including GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, and administrative teams — designed to build confidence, cultural competence, and a stronger understanding of HIV in the real world.

This training takes a community-centred approach, exploring how inequality, stigma, and structural barriers shape people’s experiences of HIV prevention, testing, and care. It aims to support more inclusive, compassionate conversations in primary care, equipping staff with the tools and confidence to reach those who are often left behind.

Together, we’ll look at the latest HIV prevention tools — including injectable PrEP — while reflecting on how everyday practice can help tackle health inequalities and strengthen trust with diverse communities.

The modules

  • Module 1: Understanding HIV Today

This session goes beyond the basics to provide an updated and justice-focused understanding of HIV in 2025. It explores how HIV intersects with inequality, who remains most affected in Lambeth, Lewisham, and Southwark, and how primary care can play a key role in improving outcomes.

    Key topics:
UK and local epidemiology, social determinants, and the evolving role of primary care.

  • Module 2: Power, Prevention, and PrEP

A practical and empowering session on HIV prevention, focusing on who is accessing PrEP and who is being left behind. Learn how primary care can address barriers, become trusted PrEP navigators, and confidently discuss emerging prevention tools.

    Key topics:
PrEP navigation, holistic prevention, tackling misinformation and exclusion, supporting diverse communities.

  • Module 3: Testing Without Stigma

This session builds confidence in offering and delivering HIV tests with compassion and clarity. It focuses on normalising HIV testing, integrating it into routine care, and recognising how stigma can shape patient experiences.

    Key topics:
Routine and opt-out testing, trauma-informed practice, communication, and delivering results with sensitivity.

  • Module 4: Cultural Competence in Real Life

Cultural competence goes beyond awareness, it’s about reflexive, respectful, intersectional practice. This session focuses on how to apply cultural competence in day-to-day consultations and build inclusive, affirming relationships with patients.

    Key topics:
Intersectionality in care, challenging bias, listening and repair, and supporting diverse lived experiences.
