PrEPster celebrates 10 years of educating and agitating for PrEP

In an often emotional and touching event, the first 10 years of the HIV PrEP programme – PrEPster – was celebrated as part of The Love Tank’s Love Hub activities last Friday 19 September 2025.

Hosted by two of PrEPster’s founders – Marc Thompson and Will Nutland – the occasion brought together people who were in the room-when-it-happened. The event featured memorial moments from those who worked alongside PrEPster activists to bring PrEP to people who need it in England.

Deborah Gold, formerly of National Aids Trust, and HIV activist Winnie Sseruma, joined Ingrid Young from the University of Edinburgh, and The Love Tank’s Phil Samba in plotting key moments in 10 years of activist history. The event played tribute to a host of other activists who were not able to join, as well an honouring the activism of PrEPster’s dear ally – the late Mags Portman.

Dr Will Nutland, co-founder of PrEPster and director of The Love Tank says:

“Friday’s event reminded us of the huge collaborations that happened to ensure that PrEP got into the bodies of those who needed it. The models that were developed to get PrEP were built on the foundations of generations of activism, and have created new strategies that other health areas have borrowed”.

Richard Kahwagi, co-founder of PrEPster says:

“Preparing for the event reminded us of the huge library of work that exists and the change that we were collectively able to forge. It has been an honour to be part of this story”.
